Adolescence is a time of life which is central to our sense of who we are. It is a time of intense emotion and of rapid change and growth. This course is for anyone who is interested in how we grow into and through adolescence and on how better to understand and relate to the young people we work with. The training will provide an introduction to the strengths challenges and disturbances of adolescence and the interventions which are likely to be most effective. It will cover the complex adolescent developmental process from a broad psychosocial perspective as well as taking into account biological influences on adolescent brain development.

Code: ASC/22/0001 Suicide first aid: understanding suicide intervention

The Suicide First Aid through Understanding Suicide Intervention course gives learners the knowledge and tools to understand that suicide is one of the most preventable deaths and some basic skills can help someone with thoughts of suicide stay safe from their thoughts and stay alive.

Suicide First Aid teaches a practical framework for interventions to be used when working with clients and service users or members of the community. Delegates will be more aware of risk factors that might lead someone to experience suicidal thoughts, spot the signs that an individual is at risk and feel confident in their response.

No previous experience or training is necessary. Participants will be asked to self-reflect and empathise with a person having thoughts of suicide. There is no expectation of participants to share their personal experiences.

As any of us could, at any time, encounter a person having suicidal thoughts, this training is open to a wide variety of staff and volunteers working with adults, children and families. It is free at the point of access.
